Service Tips (updated regularly)

Severe cold weather is difficult on all machinery. If a dock lift is exposed to the weather, severe cold can cause the lift to exhibit problems. One of the most common problems is the lift operating too slowly. This problem is caused by the cold temperatures changing the viscosity of the hydraulic fluid by making it thicker. The thicker the oil is, the slower the lift will operate.

One of the simplest safeguards available for this problem is an Oil Immersion Heater. Adding an oil heater to a lift will insure that the lift will function properly regardless of the outside temperature. Oil heaters work by keeping the hydraulic fluid at a serviceable operating temperature. This is critical for all units that have self contained power units or if the power unit is located in an unheated area because these units offer no protection from the weather.

Oil immersion heaters are easy to install. They are designed to be installed in the drain hole of some of our reservoirs and others have separate mounting holes. These heaters require a source of electrical power separate from the lifts’ power source and they are available in 120V and 240V single-phase models, depending on the application. They can even be wired in conjunction with a thermostat so that they only operate when the temperature drops below a predetermined value. On the Advance Lifts model 1045 and 1055 the heater can simply be plugged into any 15 Amp wall plug.

There is no reason for your customer to stand around waiting, in the cold, for a slow lift. If the customer complains that their lift moves too slowly in the winter, an oil immersion heater could be all they need to keep them running efficiently. If you have questions about oil heaters or any other questions about our products, please call our service department at 800-THE-DOCK or you can e-mail us at parts@advancelifts.com and we would be happy to help.
